Despite sitting at 1,607 metres above sea level, it never freezes in winter, earning its name which means "Warm Lake" in Kyrgyz. Surrounded by the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains, Issyk-Kul offers crystalline blue water, sandy beaches, ancient petroglyphs and the charming town of Karakol on its eastern shore. Song-Kul
The High-Altitude Nomadic Plateau
Song-Kul is Kyrgyzstan's most iconic nomadic destination — a vast alpine lake sitting at 3,016 metres on a wide treeless plateau ringed by rolling green hills. Every summer, Kyrgyz herders migrate here with their horses, sheep and yurts, recreating a way of life unchanged for centuries. The lake stretches 29 km long and is surrounded by silence broken only by wind, horses and the occasional eagle overhead. Ala-Kul

Sitting at 3,532 metres in the Terskey Alatau range above Karakol, this glacial lake stuns with its intense turquoise colour — the result of glacial sediment refracting sunlight in the shallow water. The classic route takes 2–3 days, passing through flower-covered valleys, moraines and a challenging rocky pass before revealing the lake in all its dramatic beauty. Kol-Suu

Merzbacher Lake

Merzbacher Lake is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in Central Asia — a glacial lake that forms each summer between two branches of the Engilchek Glacier and then catastrophically drains in a matter of days, releasing billions of litres of water through channels beneath the ice.
