Popular Trekking Routes
Ala-Kul & Karakol Valley
📍 Issyk-Kul Region · Max altitude: 3,860 m (Ala-Kul Pass)
The most popular trekking circuit in Kyrgyzstan. Starting from Karakol, you ascend through dense spruce forest, cross a glacial moraine and reach the electric-blue Ala-Kul lake at 3,532 m. The route continues over the challenging Ala-Kul Pass at 3,860 m before descending into the flower-filled Karakol Valley. This trek packs extraordinary variety into just a few days — forests, glaciers, alpine lakes and sweeping mountain panoramas.
Jyrgalan Valley Trails
📍 Issyk-Kul Region (east) · Max altitude: 3,200 m
Jyrgalan is Kyrgyzstan's rising star in adventure tourism — a remote valley near the Chinese border that has developed a network of community-run trekking routes over the last few years. Routes range from gentle day hikes through wildflower meadows to multi-day treks over high passes with overnight stays in local yurts. The valley is home to golden eagles, Marco Polo sheep and some of the most unspoiled mountain scenery in the country. Relatively few tourists reach here, making every trail feel like a discovery.
Köl-Suu & Chatyr-Kul Plateau
📍 Naryn Region · Max altitude: 3,500 m
This remote south Kyrgyzstan route combines off-road driving across the high Chatyr-Kul plateau with hiking to the extraordinary Kel-Suu canyon lake. The approach crosses wide open steppe at over 3,000 metres with views of the Kokshaal-Too range on the Chinese border. The final descent into the lake — surrounded by towering red rock walls rising straight from the water — is one of the most dramatic moments in Kyrgyz trekking. A true off-the-beaten-path adventure.
Song-Kul Plateau Loop
📍 Naryn Region · Max altitude: 3,016 m
The Song-Kul plateau trek is perfect for hikers who want big mountain scenery without technical difficulty. The route circles the vast alpine lake at 3,016 m through rolling green hills and nomadic summer pastures. Each night is spent in a traditional yurt beside the lake, with freshly prepared Kyrgyz meals and the extraordinary sound of silence at altitude. The relatively gentle terrain makes this suitable for families or those new to high-altitude trekking, while the scenery is world-class.
Central Tien Shan Expedition
📍 Central Tien Shan · Max altitude: 4,200+ m
For experienced trekkers who want to go deep into the wilderness, the Central Tien Shan offers routes through the Engilchek Glacier zone toward Khan Tengri (7,010 m). This is an expedition-grade experience requiring good fitness, proper gear and an experienced guide. You will cross high passes, camp on moraines, approach the base of some of Central Asia's highest peaks and experience a level of remoteness that few people ever encounter. The reward is incomparable — a world of ice, rock and sky at the very heart of the continent.
